Three Lions Make New Jersey’s Top 25 Greatest Female Athletes

EWING, NJ – Three women’s athletes from TCNJ were named to the 50 greatest New Jersey college women’s athletes by sportswriter Jerry Carino for Gannett NJ newspapers. In fact, all three Lions were ranked in the top-25 of the list that marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX.

Gina Carey (field hockey and lacrosse) ranks 18thRobin Selbst (field hockey, softball, lacrosse) ranks 22n.dand Hillary Klimowicz (basketball) ranks 23rd.


Here are the capsules on each of the three Lions on the list:

18. Gina Carey, The College of New Jersey

After transferring from Ohio State, Carey excelled in both field hockey and lacrosse. She left her mark in field hockey, becoming the only Division III player to earn the Honda Broderick Award as the top player in the nation (all levels). She led the Lions to D-3 national titles in 1990 and 1991, earning first team All-America honors both seasons.

22. Robin Selbst, The College of New Jersey

A two-time, first-team Division III All-American in both field hockey and softball, Selbst is the only athlete in D-3 history to win NCAA titles in three different sports (lacrosse being the third). All told, she won four national titles as a player from 1991-96.

23. Hillary Klimowicz, The College of New Jersey

After transferring from Saint Joseph’s because she felt burned out by Division I and sought a more well-rounded life, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood graduate posted 1,413 points, 832 rebounds and 314 blocks. In 2009 she led the Lions’ basketball team to the Final Four and was named Division III National Player of the Year.
