TRUCKEE, Calif. — Some of the top endurance athletes in the world were set to descend upon Palisades Tahoe this weekend for the Spartan Ultra World Championships.

The Mosquito Fire, which has burned more than 76,000 acres, forced organizers to call off the event last Friday.

“Unfortunately, after meeting daily with our on-site Spartan staff, local Tahoe officials and venue contacts, we have come to the difficult decision to cancel the 2022 North Lake Tahoe Spartan Ultra World Championship Weekend,” said organizers. “Due to the unsafe air quality, impending weather, and the current winds, we don’t feel confident that we will be able to put on a safe event that is up to our Spartan Championship standards.”

Past Spartan events at Palisades Tahoe have flooded the village with thousands of athletes and their families. This year’s competition was to feature a 24-hour, obstacle dense race for the 2022 world title. Additionally, Spartan planned to hold its 21-kilometer Beast race as well.

Organizers said athletes can transfer their entry to another Spartan event.
