Skaneateles girls swimmers earn victory over West Genesee – Eagle News Online

CAMILLUS – Neighboring girls swim programs got together Tuesday night when Skaneateles traveled to West Genesee, and it was the Lakers getting the best of the showdown.

Prevailing 95-77 over the Wildcats, the Lakers won each of the first four races, starting with a 200-yard medley relay where Elizabeth Springer, Sophia Soprano, Caitlin Comer and Marcella Buchholz finished in two minutes, 11.17 seconds to WG’s 2:16.52 .

Moving from there, Elizabeth Springer posted the fastest times in both the 200 individual medley (2:38.27) and 100 backstroke (1:08.04), with Soprano second in the 200 IM in 2:43.29.

Alice Spaulding again stood out, going 2:05.45 in the 200 freestyle and 5:37.83 to win the 500 freestyle before she joined Comer, Buccholz and Kyla Palmer to swim the 200 freestyle relay in 1:54.06.

Comer, in 1:17.68, held Arianna Matthews (1:19.84) in the 100 breaststroke, but Matthews won the 50 freestyle in 27.02 seconds to the 27.95 from the Wildcats’ Maddie Owczarzak.

Olivia Springer was first in the 100 freestyle in 1:01.42, part of a top-three sweep with Comer (1:03.06) and Palmer (1:06.65) as Palmer, Soprano, Spaulding and Springer swam the 400 freestyle relay in 4: 12.01.

WG’s lone victory came on the diving board, where Lily Mauro picked up 240.60 points to the 184.40 from Arianna Cirncione and 183.45 from Lakers teammate Phoebe Bedard.

Also for the Wildcats, Allison Putnam was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:09.66 and was just behind Elizabeth Springer in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.39, with Allison Shortslef second in the 500 freestyle.

Two nights later, WG faced Baldwinsville and prevailed, 101-79, largely leaning on its depth to defeat a Bees side featuring Eva Smith, who has already qualified for the state championship meet in two races.

Smith swam the 100 backstroke in a swift 58.59 seconds and took the 100 butterfly in 1:00.93, but her wins, along with Mia Rinko’s in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, could not keep the Wildcats from pulling away.

Owczarzak swept the sprints, going 28.44 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 1:00.42 to win the 100 freestyle as Angie Gittsschau was first in the 200 IM in 2:34.83.

Putnam went 5:50.49 in the 500 freestyle and Mauro scored 246.35 points in diving as Gittschau, Shortslef, Annaliese Straub and Lena Kent were first in the 200 freestyle relay in 2:00.64. Putnam, Shortslef, Gittschau and Owczarzak went 4:11.33 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Skaneateles swam this weekend at Watkins Glen’s invitational meet, and is back home next Tuesday to face New Hartford, with WG hosting Jamesville-DeWitt a night later.
