No. 1 Dow tennis rolls, Chargers star in pool

Dow High’s top-ranked boys’ tennis team remained unbeaten on Thursday, sweeping Davison 8-0 to improve to 20-0-1. The Chargers won every flight by scores of 6-0, 6-0.

Winning in singles for Dow were Austin King in the first flight, Aaron Li in the second flight, Logan Yu in the third flight, and Nimai Patel in the fourth flight.

In doubles for the Chargers, Thomas Ladwein and Bobo Qiu won the first flight; Jonathan Song and Aiden Tanis won the second flight; Shubhan Nagarkar and Vish Karthikeyan won the third flight; and Andrew Frickey and Dominic Griffin won the fourth flight.

Dow will head to the Forest Hills Central quad on Saturday to face host FHC, which is ranked fourth in Division 2; Traverse City St. Francis, which is ranked second in Division 4; and Rockford.

“The weather starts to turn quickly at this time of year, so it was a good experience to get out there and play a match in the cold and wind. It makes it a different game, and I am glad we got to face it prior to states,” said Chargers’ coach Terry Schwartzkopf. “For us, the state tournament starts Saturday. It is the last time to solidify some seeds and get some quality wins, and then we wait on other teams and results before we can get a clear picture of what the state draw will look like.

“Either way, I would put my boys up against any team in the state, no matter the draws. We have less than a month, and we have every intention of finishing the race before us,” he added.
