More Details On Why WWE Had Roman Reigns Beat Drew McIntyre At Clash At The Castle [Report]

Drew McIntyre came awfully close to defeating Roman Reigns at WWE Clash at the Castle, but The Tribal Chief managed to escape with a victory to retain the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

McIntyre was close to pinning Reigns, but the latter received some help from his cousin, Solo Sikoa. Reigns took advantage of the interference and pinned The Scottish Warrior to retain his two championship belts. The 37-year-old Reigns will next defend the championships against YouTube star Logan Paul at the Nov. 5 Crown Jewel pay-per-view in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required) Dave Meltzer offered more details behind WWE’s decision to have Reigns defeat McIntyre. Meltzer explained that WWE is “looking at a storyline of making him the longest reigning champion after Hulk Hogan”.

Meltzer added that WWE could have had Reigns drop the title to McIntyre and then win it back in the new year. But Meltzer added it “couldn’t have been done”, as WWE wanted to use Paul for the Crown Jewel pay-per-view. And so, the well-known YouTube star gets an opportunity of his own to end the longest-running Universal Championship reign in history.

Hogan was the WWE Champion for 1,474 days over a four-year span from early 1984 to Feb. 1988, until he dropped the title to André the Giant. Reigns’ current Universal Championship reign began at the Aug. 30, 2020 Payback pay-per-view. There, he defeated Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman in a Triple Threat bout to become the new Universal Champion. He has held the title for 753 days and counting, and Reigns also hasn’t been pinned in more than 1,000 days.

Roman Reigns’ Last Pinfall Loss

Reigns hasn’t been pinned since the TLC 2019 pay-per-view, which took place on Dec. 15 of that year. Reigns lost to King Corbin in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match. However, it wasn’t exactly a clean loss, as Corbin received help from Dolph Ziggler and The Revival in the match to defeat Reigns. At this point, it’s truly anyone’s guess when we’ll next see a superstar cleanly pin Reigns.
