The intramural soccer season has officially begun, and units from across Fort Hood are competing to earn Commander’s Cup points.
Soldiers from 89th Military Police Bde. are looking to maintain their dominating lead for this year’s Commander’s Cup competition, but also to be repeat intramural soccer champions.
“My goal for the season is to make sure the 89th MP’s repeats as post champions,” said 1st Lt. Shawn Evans-Ojeda, 89th MP Bde.
“My favorite part about intramural soccer so far has been the hype surrounding the team due to them being post champions last season,” added Maj. Adam Herring, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 720th MP Battalion. “All of the players are excited, and it just adds to the competitive atmosphere that we are building within the organization.”
Although Commander’s Cup points are a great motivator, intramural sports allow some Soldiers to participate in sports that they loved as a child like 1st Lt. Delanta Yancey, 89th MP Bde. while practicing teamwork and bonding with their peers.
“I grew up playing soccer as a kid and once I heard that there were intramurals, I asked my Soldiers if they would want to play to build some unit cohesion,” Yancey said.
“Intramural sports are the fastest way for new Soldiers to become a part of the team,” Herring said. “Most Soldiers played sports when they were in high school, so this is a great opportunity to allow them to showcase their talent.”
Although balancing their work schedules and figuring out the team members’ chemistry has been challenging Evans-Ojeda said he’s enjoyed configuring a new team full of people with different strengths.
“My favorite part has been being able to put together the new team with a lot of new Soldiers who all have different talents and starting the season off on the right track by winning our first game in convincing fashion,” he said. “It is important for Soldiers to compete in intramural sports to build camaraderie that extends outside the company.”
As far as their main goal for the season Evans-Ojeda, Yancey and Herring all agreed that they would like to see both of the teams representing the 89th MP’s competing against each other for the championship title.
Currently, the 89th MP’s have an over 600-point lead in the Commander’s Cup competition with 879 points.
