Fenton remains perfect in Stripes Division, beats Kearsley | Sports coverage for Fenton, Linden, Holly and Lake

The Fenton varsity volleyball team keeps playing better each week.

The Tigers remained perfect in Flint Metro League Stripes Division play by defeating the Kearsley Hornets in straight sets 25-15, 25-13, 25-10 on Wednesday.

“It was a great team win,” Fenton varsity volleyball coach Jenna Long said. “Everyone got playing time and everyone played well.”

The Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with kills by Adrie Staib and Paige Bakker and a block kill by Staib, but Kearsley actually ran four straight points and took a 4-3 lead.

That lead was erased by a Kearsley hitting error that gave Anna Logan the service. The Tigers followed with kills by Sienna Sahar and Bakker. Kearsley followed with a set error and the Tigers scored another point when Eva Long’s diving dig went over the net and fell to the floor. Fenton jumped to a 9-4 lead on a Kearsley hitting error.

Kearsley was able to cut the gap to 9-7, but a kill by Sahr gave Fenton the service back with a 10-7 lead. That lead grew quickly with Staib at the service line. Fenton scored a point on a Megan Gornick kill and that was followed by three straight Staib aces. The Tigers led 14-7. Set point eventually was earned on a Sahr kill.

The second set was tied until a Sahr kill gave Fenton the lead for good at 3-2. Staib went to the service line and scored four straight points with two being aces. Another came on a Lily Turkowski kill. Fenton led 7-3. Kearsley cut the gap to three times. The second time at 8-5, but a Sahr kill raised the gap back to 8-4 and gave Lilly Pihlstorm the service. She recorded four service points with one coming on an ace. Two others were on Anna Logan kills, raising Fenton’s lead to 13-5 eventually. Set point was recorded on another Logan kill.

The Tigers took a small 4-1 lead during Staib’s service early in the third set. She recorded two aces during that run. When Turkowski got the serve, the Tigers blew it open with four service points. One came on an ace and two others came on kills by Gornick and Sahar. Fenton led 9-2.

The Tigers iced the game with a Gornick kill and a block kill, making it a 14-3 Fenton lead. Long also recorded a block kill, extending the lead to 15-3. Staib provided match point with a kill.

Fenton’s next match is Wednesday at home against area rivals Linden.
