Community Boxing Hub final ‘meet the team’ at Portland YMCA

A boxing hub seeking to give grassroots and affordable boxing tutoring will be holding its final ‘meet the team’ today at the Portland YMCA from 10.30am to 3pm.

Gavin Sandford is starting The Community Boxing Hub to get local children aged five and up into boxing. Mr Sandford held the first meeting of the team on September 10.

Mr Sandford said: “The last meet the team event was a great success, with the youngsters and parents very much enjoying a try on the gloves whilst the team with pads gave them great instruction.”

The event today will introduce the team, go over training modules, answer questions and allow for a quick go on the pads.

It will be attended by the Deputy Mayor of Portland Carralyn Parkes and will feature a display of donated equipment.

Classes will start on the second Saturday of October at the Portland YMCA with class sizes of ten maximum. Sign-up is first come first served.

It is still early days, but the course will feature six, eight-week modules going over boxing basics from footwork to pads to finally sparring, potentially culminating in an amateur bout.

The equipment needed to run the sessions has been donated or fundraised for, but Mr Sandford is also hoping to raise money to cover the costs of training boxing tutors and is looking for any women 17+ interested in the role of female coach.
