Clarkson opens it’s 20th season at Sacred Heart

The 2022-23 Golden Knights enter their 20th season of play at the NCAA Div. I level this weekend as they travel to Sacred Heart in Shelton, CT. Guided by Head Coach Matt Desrosierswho is entering his 15th season, the Knights will hit the ice with a balanced scoring attack, great experience from the defensive corps, and a returning starter in net.

The scoring attack will feature more depth then it has seen in the last few seasons. The Golden Knights return 4 of their top 5 point producers from last season. Gabrielle David will be the leading scorer back from last season when she tallied 18 goals and 21 assists. Her 18 goals were tops on the team last season and Brooke McQuigge’s 16 goals was good for third most goals last season.

The Knights will feature 6 defense that saw action in 30+ games last year including 4 blue liners that played in all 37 games. Nicole Gosling and Haley Winn bring an added scoring element from the point with 30 and 23 points respectively last season.

Between the pipes, Michelle Pasiechnyk returns from a season that saw her field a 1.68 GAA and amass 20 wins. She will be challenged by returner Alexa Madridwho earned a shutout in her first start as a Gold Knight last season, transferred Holly Gruberfrom Minn.-Duluth, and incomer Julia Minotti.

Behind the bench there will be some new but familiar faces. With the departure of Britney Smith to Syracuse, Coach Desrosiers brought in former Golden Knight, Cassidy Winkle to help with the coaching duties.

The Knights open with non-league series against Sacred Heart, Bemidji St, Mercyhurst, & Syracuse. The Knights will face the Orange again in the Lake Placid Icebreaker on Oct. 21. ECAC play will begin on Oct. 28 when Clarkson hosts Union. Clarkson was picked to finish 5thth in the ECAC, and ranked 9th in both major national polls. 7 ECAC Teams were ranked in both polls, indicating ECAC play will be extremely tough this season with one of the deepest pools of talent in College Hockey.

The Knights will return 18 players and be joined by 5 freshman and 3 transfers. Below is a profile for the incoming Knights for the 2022-23 season.

Julia Minotti Goalie John Abbott College Islanders
Julia is a goalie from Laval, Quebec. She catches Left. Played in 19 games for 1105 minutes with the John Abbott College Islanders last season and earned a 1.89 goals against average and .906 save percentage. Julia is a Communication Major at Clarkson. She graduated from College Letendre in 2019 and then graduated from John Abbott College CEGEP in 2022. On her first few weeks leading up to this opening weekend, “It’s been eventful, the girls have made it easy for me to adjust. I’ve been having a lot of fun, skates have been great and it’s been a great beginning to the year!” “I decided to attend Clarkson because as soon as I met the coaches and visited Clarkson for the first time, it was clear to my parents and I that Clarkson was the place for me. The coaches automatically made it feel like home. I also choose Clarkson because of the close relationship the community has with the school, everyone knows everyone and I think that is great.” Julia was also recruited by: Cornell, Ottawa U, University of Montreal, McGill, Concordia. Minotti will be wearing #31 for the Green and Gold.

Sean Catterall Forward John Abbott College Islanders
Sena (pronounced Senn-Uh) is a left shot forward from Montreal, Quebec. She played the 2021-22 season for the John Abbott College Islanders where she appeared in 29 games, scoring 23 goals, 21 assists for 44 points. Will start as an Engineering Studies major at Clarkson, Sena graduated from St. Thomas High School in 2019. She is not just a one sport athlete, Sena was on the Canadian National Team for Baseball. Won Provincial Championship at John Abbott College and individually won the Jeff Mills Award recognizing the on and off field leadership of a graduating student athlete at John Abbott.
Sena chose Clarkson because, “It seemed like the best of both worlds, it has great academics and athletics standing. It has a great hockey program and it seems like the perfect fit for me.” Catterall was also recruited by Brown, UVM, Concordia, Bishops, UDEM, & McGill. Sena will wear #25 for the Green and Gold.

Dominique Petrie Forward Harvard University
Dominique will be a graduate transfer right shot forward from Hermosa Beach, CA. Last season with the Harvard Crimson she had 9 goals and 12 assists in 26 games. In 2019-20 season led the Women’s Hockey team in Points per game and assists (1.25 and 23, respectively) and was named to the second Team All ECAC and second Team All-Ivy League. During the COVID year that Harvard did not play she was the Assistant Coach for the LA Lions & Western Selects (summer team) in 2020-21 made it to USA Hockey Nationals. As a player with USA Hockey, Petrie played 3 years on the u-18 women’s world championship team. 2017, 2018, 2019. 2x Gold Medalist (2017 and 2018) and Silver Medalist (2019). Named Team Captain of u-18 Team in 2019 and Alternate Captain in 2018. She was named MVP of Gold Medal Game in 2018. Selected for the U-22 Summer Series in 2019 and U-23 Development Camp in 2021 and was a player in National Team Pool (attended 2019 winter camp, 2020 October Camp, 2021 March Camp, 2021 Pre Worlds Camp, 2021 Olympic Camp).
Off the ice she also played Tennis (played varsity all 4 years in high school. Ocean League Champions in 2015.) and Basketball (played Varsity 3 years in high school. 2x CIF Champion 16-17 & 17-18. Second Team All CIF in 2016-17). Also enjoys Pickleball & Spikeball, biking along the beach, cooking, discovering new music. Academically, she will be working on her Masters of Business Administration. Petrie graduated from Harvard University in 2022 with a concentration in Economics and secondary in Psychology. While at Harvard she was the President of SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee), Academic All Ivy League 2020. Graduated High School from Beverly Hills High School where she was an Hall of Fame Inductee in 2019, the Don Reynolds Memorial award recipient in 2018, 4 times Female Athlete of the Year (2014-2018) & 8 times Principal’s Honor Roll.

It has been a fun transition from Boston/Harvard to life at Clarkson says Petrie, “My first week at Clarkson has been awesome! From stepping foot on campus there has been a buzz and excitement about this new year which has been great to be a part of. From being challenged in our workouts with Tad, to team meetings identifying our goals and culture for the year coupled with my first week of classes in the MBA, I have been taking in every moment these first two weeks have presented me with. I am very eager to see what the rest of the year holds for myself and the team and can’t wait to be apart of everything we accomplish!” Dominique added she choose Clarkson because “of its rich hockey tradition and tight knit community. Immediately stepping on the campus I could undeniably feel there was something special here and I wanted to be a part of it! Clarkson provides me with the opportunity to develop my game on and off the ice while simultaneously pursuing my MBA.” Petrie will wear #29 for the Green and Gold

Holly Gruber Goalie University of Minnesota Duluth
Holly is a left catching Goalie from Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Played last season for the NCAA Runner Up, Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. Holly was a participant in the USA Under-18 Top 66 Camp in 2019, as well as the 2018 and 2019 USA Hockey National Development Camps. Also played with the Madison Capitols in the 2017-18 season winning a state championship that year.
Holly’s family had multiple deer farms and a cranberry marsh back home in Wisconsin. She will be a Global Supply Chain Management major at Clarkson. Before Duluth, Holly was a 2020 graduate of Stevens Point Area Senior High, where she earned highest honors all years, finishing ranked 5th of 514 students. Why Holly choose Clarkson: “After speaking with the coaches and gaining an insight into how they coach and Clarkson’s great team culture, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of and contribute to. Clarkson is an exceptional school with an excellent hockey program that provides opportunities to be successful on and off the ice.” Gruber will wear #35 for the Green and Gold

Darcie Lappan Forward Colgate University
A left shot forward from Hartington, Ontario, Darcie has appeared in 56 games for Colgate (2019-20 & 2020-21) scoring 14 goals and adding 5 for 19 points.
Lappan will be an Environmental Science and Policy major at Clarkson…Graduated from Sydenham High School in 2019. Darcie chooses Clarkson: “I choose Clarkson for the reputation of the hockey program along with the programs values, compete level and the emphasis on development. The hockey program along with the rigorous academics and small campus made Clarkson the perfect fit for me.” Lappan will wear #27 for the Green and Gold

Jaidan Fahrny Forward Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and Shady Side Academy Girls’ Prep
Jaidan is a right shot forward from Pittsburgh, PA. Fahrny played for both her school team at Shady Side and the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite. She was invited to the USA U15 National camp in 2019, the U16/17 National camp in 2020, and the U16/17 National camp in 2021.
Jaidan will start as an Engineering Studies major at Clarkson. She graduated from Shady Side Academy in 2022, where she won the 2019 WIHLMA Champions with Shady Side Academy Girls’ Prep. She was also a key contributor for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite when they captured the 2019 USA Hockey National Champions (Girls’ Tier I 14 & Under) Her Academic Awards include: Raphael M. Sotak Honors (2019), Stephen Michael Shenkan Memorial Award (2020 ), Cum Laude (2022), Aurelian Award (2022), 2022 Rotary Student Recognition Award for Science. Fun Fact: At the age of 3, after two ballet classes, she hung up her ballet flats and decided to start playing hockey. Jaidan choose Clarkson: “because of the high standards the school requires of its students and hockey players all while offering numerous outdoor opportunities. I love the small-town atmosphere, and I was instantly attracted to how the university and women’s hockey team strive to give back to the surrounding community.” Also recruited by Boston College, Northeastern, Princeton, Quinnipiac, and Wisconsin. Fahrny will wear #11 for the Green and Gold

Paige Hull Defense Kingston Jr Ice Wolves
Paige is a left shot defense from Whitby, ON. Hull scored 5 goals and added 12 assists in 28 games with the Kingston Jr. Ice Wolves in 2021-22. Paige will be a Business Intelligence and Data Analytics major at Clarkson. She graduated from Holy Cross Secondary School. Paige choose Clarkson because, “I fell in love with the campus right away and the hockey team / culture is everything I want in a hockey program.” Also recruited by Yale & Dartmouth. Hull will wear #16 for the Green and Gold.

Ashlyn Ham Forward East Coast Wizards
Ashlyn is a right shot forward from Framingham, MA. She played for the East Coast Wizards in 2021-22 and 2020-21. Ham attended the 2019 and 2018 USA Hockey National Evaluation Camps. She will start in Business Studies at Clarkson. Ashlyn graduated from Berkshire in 2022. Ashlyn choose Clarkson because “as a hockey player the team was a perfect fit as well as the academics.” Ham will wear #19 for the Green and Gold.
