Claremore resident named champion | News

FORT WORTH – The National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) congratulates Wesley Galyean of Claremore, Oklahoma, riding Third Edge on their championship in the Open Derby at the 2022 NCHA Great American Insurance Group Summer Cutting Spectacular.

Third Edge is a 4-year-old stallion owned by SMF Cutting Horses of Aspen, Colorado. In the Open Derby first-go, this pair marked a 221.5 to qualify them for the second go where they earned a composite score of 440. This composite secured their spot in the semi-finals where they marked a 223.5 to earn their spot among the 21 horse and rider teams to advance in the Open Derby finals.

Galyean piloted Third Edge to a score of 226.5 in the finals to win $23,435.41 and the championship title.

This is the pair’s second Open Derby championship in Will Rogers Coliseum. Earlier this year, they tied with Galyean’s brother, Beau Galyean, and Reybels Cause for the 2022 NCHA Kit Kat Sugar Super Stakes Open Derby co-championship.

“It’s an extreme blessing, and it’s just about that horse,” said Wesley of Third Edge in a post-run interview. “He is just a special horse, and he has been all along. I am just so thankful and blessed just to be on his back and to get to be a part of it and get to compete at such a high level.”

The 2022 NCHA Great American Insurance Group Summer Cutting Spectacular is being held at the historic Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas from July 16 through August 5. To learn more about the National Cutting Horse Association, including upcoming events, please visit
